The Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), in collaboration with SecFin Africa, successfully hosted a five-day training programme on Financial Investigations and Asset Recovery in Gaborone from 25 to 29 May 2026.
The training brought together officers from various institutions within Botswana’s Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/PF) framework. The programme was designed to enhance participants' skills and knowledge in conducting financial investigations, tracing illicit proceeds, and recovering assets linked to criminal activities.
The training was officially opened by FIA Director General, Bopelokgale Soko, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kgosietsile Ngakaagae.
In her remarks, the FIA Director General expressed appreciation to SecFin Africa for its continued support in strengthening Botswana’s financial crime-fighting capabilities. She also commended the various stakeholder institutions for prioritising the training and investing time and resources in building their investigative capacity.
The Director of Public Prosecutions welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns with his vision of strengthening the Directorate’s capacity to effectively investigate and prosecute financial crimes while ensuring that criminals are deprived of the proceeds of their unlawful activities.
The programme was facilitated by international experts drawn from different disciplines and jurisdictions, who shared practical experiences and best practices on financial investigations, asset tracing, confiscation, and international cooperation in asset recovery.
The training forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and enhance Botswana’s effectiveness in combating money laundering, related predicate offences, and other forms of financial crime.
The FIA remains committed to working closely with local and international partners to build the capacity of competent authorities and safeguard the integrity of Botswana’s financial system.
